WHAT ARE THE ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN INTEGRATING ICT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IN OUR MALAYSIAN SCHOOLS

ICT nowadays are something that interesting to be explored and to be learn. It is quiet peculiar if people in this modern day do not know how to use technology of internet for example. There are many things that government has implemented for our own good. But whether we realize it and take the opportunity to use it wisely or just let it passing by without a bit of glance at all. Some of us just ignored it. At final, all depend on us actually. The perspective of Malaysian people toward ICT should be corrected first. There are many challenges that we as a teacher should take a close look and understand what were being discussed by others.

First of all, the awareness of the society toward the application of technology in our Malaysian school concept is still at low level. Some of them still think that Smart School concept is same with normal school. They feel that no such interesting condition that differ normal school with smart school. This is due to the lack of knowledgement about smart school that had being applied with ICT. They also do not have the encouragement in sending their children to the smart school because they think that smart school is for smart student only. But the reality is totally different. All of these perspectives were the misunderstanding that should be corrected quickly. ICT is important in teaching and learning process, therefore implementing smart school is one best way to equip the students with latest technology so that they will have a bright future and can compete with others in a higher level. Not just in this country. Although ICT have the pro and con, but the point is, we just want to make sure that we are not too far behind in technology. So, the better way is by having ICT in school.

Other than that, preparing a perfect teacher as a medium to teach the student is one of the challenges. Teachers should have the qualification and knowing the component of ICT to be a good in delivering information to their student. Today, teaching and learning process is not in a static mode. Having varieties of ICT will make the student easier in getting information and have fun during learning period. We should know that every student has their own style of study. So, we as a teacher should notice this and then tried to delivering the content of teaching in the way the student will understand. Nowadays, the process should be in ‘student centered’ not ‘teachers centered’ like we always did like in the past. Teachers were asked to encourage them in what they are doing. Today generations should be more matured in this kind of method. Teachers should be able to create the creative and critical thinking in student. Teachers will be the role model to student. Therefore, we should learn the ICT and the important of it. This is all for our future generation.
